  • For a few nights I travelled down to Berrow Beach near Burnham on Sea to photograph the wreck of the SS Nornen. I previously had not realised how mobile the mud in the Bristol Channel is. On previous occasions I was unable to get this close to the timbers as the mud was too deep and sucky. On this night I had the perfect combination of clean sand, falling tide and sunset.

  • The Old Red Crane at Portland Bill in Dorset is a relic of the stone quarrying that happened all around the island coast. Photographed in evening light under a stormy sky.

  • I tend to follow bad weather when looking for landscape images. This night led me to Bridgwater Bay. The rising tide encroaching onto the Jurassic limestone beds at Lilstock beach formed the perfect turbulent counterpoint to the lowering skies.

  • I love modern architecture and I have worked with many fine architects, including Niall McLaughlin, but unfortunately not on this, his masterpiece Bishop Edward King Chapel in Ripon College, Oxford. <br />

On this visit, I mostly shot the interior as the sunlight was really bright, which didn't do any favours for the exterior. However I did find this shot with the strong shadows and crosses leaning on the wall. I played with the lighting a little in post processing to bring out the shape and textures.

  • It was a long time before I finally got around to photographing the architecture of the 2012 Olympics site in London. I admired Zaha Hadid for a long time and her Aquatic Centre is certainly better off in its legacy format without the temporary seating grandstands. I waited a long time so an hour more waiting for just the right light was little hardship.<br />

    Linear Curves
  • I have worked with Tim Ronalds on a number of projects, including very limited input to the design of the Landmark Theatre in Ilfracombe. On a trip to North Devon I went back to look at how the building has patinated, exposed to the Atlantic weather. The altocumulus clouds that were just forming were a gift.<br />

    The Cloud Machine
  • The gloominess of the interior of the Library at Trinity College Dublin fascinated me. I spent some time soaking up the atmosphere before deciding on an almost abstract shot. To me this represented the relentless passing of time turning current ideas into ancient history.<br />

  • I love shooting modern architecture and the Joan Miro Foundation, Barcelona by Josep Lluís Sert epitomises this. <br />

The day was very bright and the white concrete produced quite a lot of glare. I shot this for conversion to black and white and then manipulated the light in post processing to give an ethereal quality.

  • The new American Embassy in London presents a curious conflict of architecture and defensiveness. Unlike the many publicity shots in circulation, I chose to represent the building's defensive nature.<br />

    Glittering Fortress
  • We quietly watched this Elephant family for nearly an hour before they became sufficiently accustomed to the vehicle to stop being defensive. Then I was able to catch some natural behaviours. My favourite was this close shot of the very young calf bonding with its mother by exchanging breath.<br />

    Maternal Bond
  • I watched this very young Galapagos Sea lion Pup for a while. It was entertaining itself playing with a stick and got covered in sand. Suddenly it rushed down to the water's edge and I realised its mother was returning from the sea. I managed to catch just the moment of a traditional sea lion greeting.<br />

  • Meerkats are obliging little critters when it comes to posing photogenically. This family group at Jersey Zoo was particularly well choreographed, displaying a full range of behaviours atop their rock. The adults adopted their classic lookout poses whilst the youngsters snoozed alongside.

  • I watched this Leopard relaxing on a tree branch for some time hoping that it would wake up and do something, well anything actually. When it finally decided to move, and after a quick wash it looked out over its domain. It looked straight through me, letting me know it was well aware of our presence, but couldn't care less.<br />

  • As I was preparing to lock up and leave the Ripon College Chapel, this madonna statue caught my eye, standing in the late evening light from a window. With the interior lights turned off the extreme backlighting made a beautiful play, but was quite difficult to capture.<br />

  • I love shooting architectural details as well as whole buildings. This section of ETFE cladding caught the light of the setting sun on one side against the deep blue of the evening sky on the other and really came to life. I had to shoot it.<br />
